My book explores the lives of girls and young women who made the harrowing journey from the cotton fields of the Deep South to the dizzying streets of Chicago’s Loop. I chronicle their ups and down in the midst of a momentous period in African American history. I trace their steps through Chicago between 1917-1950—from public schools to dance halls to storefront churches. I’m also proud to share that MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry has reviewed my book, calling it a “singular contribution to our understanding of the Great Migration” and a “a perfect book for a moment when we struggle with the twin realities of the extraordinary girlhoods of the Obama daughters and violent brevity of the girlhood of Renisha McBride.”
